Peer Research Consultants: WorldCat

WorldCat

WorldCat.org is one of the world's largest network of library content and services. WorldCat.org lets you search the collections of libraries in your community and thousands more around the world.

You can search WorldCat from the Smith Library Center website by clicking "Looking for the Old Search" under the main search box.

Use WorldCat:

  • When you know the title of the book you want, but you don't know which libraries have it.
  • You want to know what books and other information sources exist on your topic, not just the ones that are available in one library.
  • You need more information about a book or other information source (like its full list of authors, its publisher, etc.)

Search WorldCat

  • WorldCat has a Basic Search on the front page, which is very straightforward. Just click the tab for the type of item you want, and then enter the title, author or keywords you are looking for.
  • WorldCat also has an Advanced Search with many more options. To get to it, click Advanced Search under the search box on the front page.
  • Advanced Search options include:
    • Boxes to enter author, title, and keyword
    • Drop down Boolean operators
    • Only return peer-reviewed articles, open access, expand search with related terms
    • Publication date range
    • Format (book, ebook, journal, electronic journal, microfilm, etc.)
    • Libraries Worldwide OR Southwestern
